In July, the National Museum “the Memorial in Commemoration of Famines’ Victims in Ukraine” celebrates its 4th anniversary. It is the first time the Museum celebrates its anniversary and presents the exhibition “Holodomor Victims Commemoration Center”. The exhibition shows the history of constructing the Memorial and founding the Museum, provides information on the Museum’s scientific, research, cultural and educational activity as well as on the results of the international search project “Let’s Remember Them… they Lived in Famines’ Years”.
The exhibition includes unique photos, normative and legal acts, archival materials, excerpts of press materials as well as the newly revealed lists of the Holodomor 1932-1933 victims.
The “Memorial in Commemoration of Famines’ Victims in Ukraine” was founded in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine”, issued on November 28th, 2006. The territory of the Memorial was opened on November 22nd, 2008 in Kyiv, Ukraine.
State Museum “The Memorial in Commemoration of Famines’ Victims in Ukraine” was founded in accordance with the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers #435-p, issued on April 22nd, based on the Decree of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory ( a special executive body) #75, issued on July 8th, 2009. The status of a national establishment was granted by the Decree of the President of Ukraine #188 “On granting the status of national establishment .to State Museum “The Memorial in Commemoration of Famines’ Victims in Ukraine”, issued on February 18th, 2010.
Today, the National Museum “The Memorial in Commemoration of Famines’ Victims in Ukraine” is a center of commemorating and paying tribute to the people murdered by famine in the first half of the 20th century. Besides, the Museum is gradually becoming an All-Ukrainian Scientific and Research Center of Holodomor studies.
The Museum has started the “Let’s remember them… They lived in Famines’ Years” project on finding out the names of Holodomor victims. The newly revealed names of the victims are included in the additional volumes of the National Book of Memory of the Holodomor 1932-1933 victims.
The “Memorial in Commemoration of Famines’Victims in Ukraine” is the only Museum that is included into the official Ceremonial places list (according to the Decree of the President of Ukraine №746 “On State Protocol and Ceremonial of Ukraine””, issued on August 22nd, 2002). Within 4 years, the Museum has been visited by millions of guests from Ukraine and all around the world, including 48 official delegations from other countries. So, the Museum is also a “face” of Ukraine, presenting Ukraine to the international community.
The exhibition “Holodomor Victims Commemoration Center” is open at the National Museum “The Memorial in Commemoration of Famines’; Victims in Ukraine” from July 3rd till August 19th, 2013.
